Wow I didnt know Applebees was not doing well! Help an IHOP would be wonderful! Maybe Duluth would get one too in a couple of years! To me it seems as if Applebees in Cloquet would want to relocate to Superior Crossings just because of the exposure and better location. When I ever go to that Applebees its always jammed packed... but then again if the company is doing badly then who knows what might happen. Culvers I really could see being they have opened in Two Harbors and Superior and are opening in Duluth, the next location would be in Cloquet and this development is perfect for them. Now last night I looked at the site more and saw that one of the outlots for a restaurant Re-Cor had specifically designed for the site plan of Ruby Tuesday. Re-Cor also works with Ruby Tuesday a lot in their developments.... so I could see Re-Cor trying to land them in this development. I've always liked Ruby Tuesdays. The ones in the Twin Cities are wonderful, plus their new store prototypes are gorgeous. But we all have our own opinions Also when looking at the site plan another sit down restaurant site plan was the exact site plan of an Olive Garden. Now I know that seems drastic... but they have been looking for a second site in Duluth... and there casino isnt too far away... plus if Cabelas is going to be right there. You never know! But with these outlot restaurant site plans they are usually generic and none of them have sold yet.... but out of the seven site plans that they put in for restaurants two of them distinctly are the site plans of an Olive Garden and Ruby Tuesday. I did find one thing that Superior Crossings is lacking..... A HOTEL! This site really is going to need one. Cabelas often draws vistors who just come to the city to go to Cabelas and do nothing else. All of the Cabelas I have been to have a hotel on site or near by. So I am wondering a hotelier might try to build a location right next to this development. Wow am I excited! This is really going to spur some development in this area. And you are exactly right.... if you build it they will come and that will be for surely be the case with this development... and the Hermantown one too.

I was searching on the internet to find more about "Superior Crossings" the retail development being built in Cloquet and not only did I find a site plan and detailed plans for the development but I also stumbled across something else. A 250,000+ SQUARE FOOT RETAIL DEVELOPMENT BEING BUILT IN HERMANTOWN! This was so random to stumble across and I cant even believe this happening. It is called "Hermantown Square" and it is located on the corner of Highway 53 and Lavaque Road. It features a huge 154,000 square foot general mechandise retailer... can we guess who most likely will be looking at the site (WALMART SUPERCENTER)! On the site plan the General Merchandise Retailer spot is the exact design of Walmart Super Center. But next to the large big box is three spots, one 21,000 square feet, one 30,000 square foot space and a 23,000 square foot space and also has one pad site for sale (Most likely for a fast food retailer). This is so exciting! RE-COR who is developing this must plan on this being a big development because they also have another 20 acres for sale behind this development. Re-Cor plans on opening this development in the Spring OR Summer of 2009. Now I know most people are probably saying is this still going to happen because that is really soon that it would have to open. But it must be current because this was just put on their website. I always check Re-Cor's website and it has never been on there before, just like Superior Crossing hasnt been. They both must have been put on in the last week. Now here is some information on Superior Crossings. First of all the site is 650,000 square feet and is absolutely gigantic! Ok so this site has a ton of restaurants, 4 sit down, 3 fast food, a bank, a gas station, and so much more. The inline retail space totals over a 100,000 square feet. Ok here we go on the major anchors of the development. The General Merchandise retailer is 187,334 square feet and is in the exact design of a Super Target. How many square feet are normal Super Targets? 186,000 SQUARE FEET!!! It is Super Target with no doubt. Then there is an 82,000 square foot Outdoor Retail Sales Anchor in the exact Design of a Cabelas! Then there is a a 116,000 square foot Home Improvement tenant with a 30,000 square foot garden center. I looked online at both Home Depot and Lowes and found an article stating that that 117,000 square feet and 30,000 square foot garden center are the normal sizes for a LOWE'S STORE! Then at the site there is a Jr Anchor that is 88,400 square feet. What could it be? Well it is designed identically to a KOHL'S STORE! Now you might be saying well the site plan may look like one but that doesnt mean it is. Well Kohls stores also only go in 88,248 SQUARE FOOT SPACES! So it has to be a Kohl's Plus the site plan shows the exact special design a Kohls store only has! And finally next to Kohls there is another store, a 53,000 square foot Sporting Goods store... the site plan clearly shows the design of a major chain sporting goods store. DICKS SPORTING GOODS. The site plan has the exact design of their store. Plus their average locations are between 50,000 and 55,000 square feet! Look for Superior Crossings to open in Spring/Summer 2010! I am so excited! This is going to do so much for both areas. Let me know your thoughts! Here are the site plans of each center!

I can't believe Cloquet is getting a development like this! On that Hermantown plan, Bill & Irv's is a name that has been floating around that property for years, even when they were cleaning it up in the early 2000's. As any development in the Duluth area, I don't really get my hopes up until there are bulldozers and coming soon signs. Also they ought to change that part of LaVaque Rd. to Ugstad Rd., because LaVaque is the road that the other smaller "Hermantown Square" is located further down 53!

I know! I was confused first when I saw LaVaque road because I knew Hermantown Square was located on that corner.... so then I knew it must not be there. Then bbtrips alerted me about the difference in the two.

Looking online at different Walmart Supercenters being developed by Re-Cor and on all of their site plans each Walmart Supercenter is 154,000 square feet. Now when I was looking online at the original Hermantown Walmart Supercenter proposed that one was to be 204,000 square feet with a Gas Station. The one in the Hermantown Center is 154,000 square feet and the current Walmart is 116,000 square feet. So it got me to thinking that wouldnt they build a bigger one? So when I was looking on more site plans I found a disclaimer stating that the General Merchandise retailer space is a pre designed site plan and that variations in height and store size are possible. So I am trying to figure out if the Walmart Supercenter is going to be that original 203,000 square feet at the Hermantown Center and still include a gas station even though its not on the site plan, or if Hermantown Center will just have a smaller Walmart. Anyone know? CometoDuluth do you know anything about this? I still am very curious to see if we will get the new upscale version of Walmart Supercenter.

Okay.... this might be what they are up to with the Super Walmart in Hermantown.... We have 5 other Super Walmarts within a radius of 15 -20 miles and No. 6 was opened a little over a year ago in the expanding part of town towards Atlanta. It's kind of a slimmed down version of the other 5. It has all the components of the others except they don't have the beauty salon, nail studio, blah blah that most walmarts have in the front of their stores - they do have a Subway, customer service and restrooms up front - that's it. It reduces the depth of the building, but the width is still the same. And, the presentation of the merchandise is more upscale than other Walmarts. No clutter. That could be part of the square footage that is missing from the plans. Also, they don't have a gas station, which all the others do. It's still big and has the tire/oil change/HUGE gardencenter components with pads for development on their property. Even tho we have numerous Lowe's in the area, they are building another one right next door. Home Depot is already across the road, as if we needed another one. Lowe's and Walmart go hand and hand when they build at least they do down here in the Deep South.

Oh interesting! That may be exactly the case! What does that sixth Walmart Supercenter look like? Does it look like the one in the link? I am thinking that what you said could be the case or that it might just be a generic site plan that put on the Hermantown Center site plan.

No, it doesn't look like the one in the link. It might just be the signage tho. The building itself is nearly half again as long as Target with 3 entrances (one for the garden center), if that tells you anything. I can only compare it to the Walmart in Cloquet, which is disgusting as far as I'm concerned. This one is about 3/4 the size with less health & beauty (but everything you would want and need) and hardware stuff. If that helps...... I wish I could link pictures, but I'm not that saavy.

Oh that helps and it is perfectly fine the information you have given us! I am wondering if ours will be like that link being that design went into effect in June 2008. All Walmart Supercenters in Minnesota opened before that date.

That's interesting about all that potentially coming. I'm wondering what's up with Cabela's though. I contacted them and they said they were showing no plans for Cloquet. Is this info that they are coming direct from Cabela's or still just part of the old rumor mill that's been going on for years? I knew Target had scouted Cloquet before too, so if that does come that will be nice. I also wonder when this Applebee's to IHOP change would happen. We were supposed to get an IHOP here but it has been put on hold due to the economy. Hopefully if the change happens up there we'll get our IHOP here too. It'll be really nice if both Super Target and Super Walmart come to the area since I'm so tired of reading all the complaints that they aren't there. I think everyone needs to be excited about what they have or what they are getting whether they like that particular business or not considering the economy is the way it is. People here constantly complain about what we lack too and it gets really old really fast. It could always be worse and the grass will always be greener someplace else.
