Yes, the ticks are always that bad - they seem to be really small this year too.
If you want to stop and get the absolute best burgers at a low cost stop in Barnum - the Lakeside Cafe. It is right off of the highway and is worth the stop.

1. Go to the A&W in Pine City, one of the few remaining carhops.
2. Take in a cultural experience in Pine City: Czech Booya Fest, Arts Fest, Rendezvous Fall Gathering, Gay Pride, etc.
3. Support and be entertained by the Pine City arts scene: Friday night concert series, Heritage Players Theatre, Pine Center for the Arts activities, etc.
4. Go to Pine City's Westside Park beach and lay out, or swim. (Also, of note: There are horseshoe pits here and a skate board park).
5. Walk the Pine City trails at Voyageur Park or the Community Fitness Trails at the end of Hurley Avenue SE.
6. Rent skates at Lee's Pro Shop of Pine City and go ice skating at one of the city rinks.
7. Dine out at one of 34 places to eat in Pine City.
8. Enjoy camping, golfing, fishing, boating or just plain relaxing in Pine City.
9. Shop til you drop at the Chicken Koop, Discover Serendipity, Scrapbooking in the Pines or one of the other gift or specialty stores in Pine City. (Of note: Sausers Hardware, specializing in rare hardware and unique gifts, is 100+ years old).
10. The list goes on; Pine City is a one-stop destination city of "Things to do between Duluth and Minneapolis".

From Duluth to Mpls. you could take Wsc. Hwy 35 out of Superior Wsc. and follow the border and cross over to MN, further down.

Along the way you could geocache that entire route and find many interesting places that way.

Another idea would be to take the standard way 35 s. and geocache all along the way also. Lots of parks and stuff to find that way also.

Stopping and doing that is a good idea and dosent cost any extra money that way.
Thanks
