cloquet/duluth (Minneapolis, Mora, Hinckley: rent, mortgage, find a job)

My husband works in Minneapolis and I've just found a job in Duluth, would it be a good idea for us to stay in Cloquet and have him commute everyday ? Are there any other suggestions ? Should we stay somewhere in between the two cities ? We've just moved here from Mississippi, and don't really know much about places here

The two cities are far enough apart (hour and a half or so) that commuting from one to the other isn't going to be easy. The easier commute would be from the Twin Cities to Cloquet. YOu will probably be better off looking in Mora, Hinckley or that area OR if you could find a job in the Twin Cities.

Cloquet is about 20 minutes away from Duluth. certainly not a good halfway point.


look for a job in Minneapolis. Whatevers being offered in Duluth, theres about 100 more similar jobs available in the city

Ouch, Duluth looks like its really got a bad rap.

Cloquet is not half-way between the the Twin Cities and Duluth, and Hinckley or Mora would be your best choice there but I have to say that Duluth is a nice place and even though you'll find 100 more similar jobs in the Twin Cities you will have to contend with living there. I suggest checking Duluth out, maybe you'll like it maybe you won't it's really your decision and you'll never know what it's like until you visit.

Duluth is actually a very beautiful city with a lot of things to offer. However, jobs are not among them.

The distance from Duluth to Cloquet is about 20 miles, a fairly easy (no traffic congestion) commute on I-35 (70 mph near Cloquet, 55 mph on the elevated freeway in Duluth). The commute to Minneapolis would be at least 2 hours...

It depends on what your husband does for a living. The cities pay better, but the cost of living up north here is way cheaper and the traffic isnt half as bad!

Duluth is a wonderful weekend getaway but its too sleepy for my tastes.


I grew up in Cloquet but worked my teenage years in Duluth. I dont know that I could ever live there again...but I still love visiting.

Heavens to Betsy no! He would be spending 5 hours tops driving every day! Not just because of the distance but the traffic. You would be spending more on gas than your rent or mortgage payment! I would strongly discourage commuting from the Duluth area to Minneapolis. Not to mention, traffic comming north of the cities on 35 on Friday afternoon is backed up the whole way.
