Credit card companies have student versions of credit cards with low credit limits. Usually like 500-1000$. Then they up the credit line with good payment history.
I had one back in the day from citibank with a 1k limit. Never used it so I closed the account.
A credit card is neither bad nor good, despite what some on here will say. It's what you do with it that matters.
While a debit card functions in largely the same way, there will be some times in your life where you need to make a purchase and don't have the cash in your checking account to cover it. Mind you, the operative word there is "need." As in car repairs and things such as that. A new article of clothing or beer doesn't qualify as a need. Those are wants.
since you are in school study up on the mechanics of interest and pay particular note to how high the interest level is (student CCs frequently push 30%)
it's nice to have one for emergencies, holding incidentals at a hotel, etc
however, you will not want to be paying off beer and hoagie 3 years from now
another option would be "secured" CCs - basically you deposit some money and then can leverage it a little .... can find some better rates
20 years ago the credit card companies used to line the halls of the student union building, and hand out T shirts and swag for filling out the apps.
Don't go overboard. Apply for one card w/citibank or something - you'll likely get a low 3-500 limit. Use the card infrequently for small purchases that you know you have cash to cover.
Pay off the bill when it comes and don't carry a balance.
Before you know it, that 300 dollar limit card will be 15 years old, and you'll have 35 grand available to you.
I think everybody needs to have a credit card, just the same way every business needs to have a line of credit. It's not there to buy movie tickets and the like. It's there as insurance in case the unpredictable happens.
I am a college student, I want to get a student credit card but I have no line of credit. Tips?
I always thought credit cards were available to all college students since I heard that they make a killing through them. I see no reason why you can't get some kind of credit card but I don't know you. Get one and only spend affordable amounts on it and pay it off every month. That's how I started.
