Is this true about W2's?

Paper copies of W-2's are due Jan 31, 2012 or by February 1.

Large corporations ususally get out the W-2's earlier than small companies.

I was a Payroll Mgr of 2 very large corporations. Now have an accounting practice that provides W-2's and 1099's for some clients.

Yep, it is the 31st. The W2's have to be post marked by the 31st. There are fines involved and employers generally don't mess around with it. Now having said that I know of a person that worked for a horrible little company where the owners were ding bats. They slacked off and didnt get the W2's done in time. So the owner used the in office postage machine and changed the date to the 31st even though she didn't get them in the mail till the 2nd of Feb. For her to go through the trouble of changing the date means it was enough of a worry to make sure it was post marked "on time". I don't think you will have a problem. It's not the risk for most companies.

Hubby worked at a place once that never mailed them on time.

I don't think the USPS will accept mail with an incorrect post date anymore.

They dropped them in a mailbox on a saturday. The company folded a year later. I don't know how they lasted as long as they after all the stories my friend told me.

We have gotten ours as late as 2 weeks after the 31st. Yeah, they mailed them on the 31st...sure... I tend to think places push it when they can. This was a huge multinational corporation, this happened to us last year. Maybe lost in the mail? I don't know what the explanation was. But this year we got it a few days ago. Well before the deadline, so whatever happened last year, did not happen again obviously.

I would think that since everything is automated, it wouldn't take a month to get W-2's. I could see if one uses a payroll company. My son and step-son said that they got their W-2's on Jan 9th. Then again there are only 35 employees and they have one person who does payroll.
