Two weeks ago, I paid by check for a new appliance at Sears. About a week later, I received a call from a guy with Telecheck advising me that I had insufficient funds in my checking account, and that Telecheck, after covering the check amount for Sears, was now expecting immediate payment to Telecheck of the amount PLUS a $93 charge. I said I wasn't going to give out personal info over the phone, etc., and he replied that if I declined, my credit would be ruined immediately. It was like dealing with a debt collector at the front door.

I was guilty of having insufficient funds in my checking account -- $3 and change -- but the guy would not relent.

Has anyone else experienced this?

The $93 charge is a little steep. It was $25 in 2004, when I dealt with them. Their phone reps are debt collectors. As for ruining your credit, that's a bit of an exaggeration on his part. Telecheck doesn't report to the 3 major reporting agencies. They do maintain an internal database, that is shared with subscribers of their services. The worst that could happen, is that you won't be able to write checks in certain retail establishments.
