Times are so bad in many sections of the economy that even the homeless are looking for ways to survive...whatever it takes.

This is so sad.

I suspect we will see more of this happening as times turn tougher!

We had an man with health care issues rob a bank here in North Carolina a while back just so he could get treatment for his health needs in jail.

He included that fact in the note he handed to the teller so she would not be too "alarmed".

Vagrants getting themselves locked up when it starts to get cold is an old tactic.
The expansion to others and out of season is distressing.

We used to have a street person who always threw a brick into a plate glass store window every fall to get locked up for the winter. Got to the point he'd walk into a police station and slam a brick on the officers desk to save all the glass he was breaking! He always got locked up till spring to!

I don't think the city minded to much 'cause this fella was alway picking up trash and sweeping the streets to keep his neighborhood clean.

yep, 2 homeless men in a town near me just 'robbed' a bank with a note about a month ago. They pick the bank on the most congested road in the County and one of the guys has the same red and white towel in his booking photo that he had wrapped around his face at the bank.

I suppose a warm bed with a roof over your head and food beats sleeping outside and starving. How do you get to the point as a society where for some, losing your freedom is better than keeping it?

As has been said this has ALWAYS been the case for some.
And it always will be the case for some.

The issue to focus on is how the raw number of that "some" has increased.

During the great depression men who were tired of being half starved..and living out doors where they were preyed upon by other desperate men- would toss a brick through the bank window- Brick tossing became pretty common- The authorities would give them 30 days in the slammer- They could eat- bath and recover..

People who are not mentally ill who are on the streets...are smart enough to know they will die out there they don't make a move soon- So they ask for help..This poor guy mentioned in this story knew that a brick though a window would not be enough to secure some security behind bars- so the courthouse looked like his best bet. I hope he regains this health and gets back on his feet.
