"Nixon’s proposed Family Assistance Program (FAP), intended to replace the service-oriented Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), would have provided working and nonworking poor families with a guaranteed annual income—though Nixon preferred to call it a “negative income tax.”"

Disincentivizes people further.
Waters down everyone else's salary.
No, thanks.

personally i would pull all welfare and everyone able to work has to work or suffers the consequences.

humans are the only species on the planet that tries to sustain those that should have failed.

we reward failure far to much.

That would be delightful.

That "everyone must work" thing assumes (requires really) that there actually are jobs for all to do at
their almost always limited skill level that will also pay enough to maintain themselves on...
and/or that some other means and manner is used to make up for the shortfall in the current availability
of that sort of job that neither industry or government seems able to make up for now.

Any ideas?
And remember the problem isn't about the first 10,000 or so that can be managed even now.
The problem is with the MILLION's that will be lined up behind them.

oooh there will be plenty of jobs created once that welfare dough is freed up to create them and have things done that are needed .

the states and cities have been dropping lots of services and things they really need to maintain because of lack of funds.

The primary goal of a guaranteed minimum income is to combat poverty. If citizenship is the only requirement, the system turns into a basic income guarantee.

basic income or citizen’s income is a proposed system[1] of social security that regularly provides each citizen with a sum of money unconditionally. In contrast to income redistribution between nations themselves, the phrase basic income defines payments to individuals rather than households,[2] groups, or nations, in order to provide for individual basic human needs. Except for citizenship, a basic income is entirely unconditional. Furthermore, there is no means test or impact as a result of other income; the richest as well as the poorest citizens would receive it.

The worst idea you could imagine.

Our whole welfare system is designed to incentivize failure. This idea only takes it further. I completely agree with you.

That's the first 10,000 or so that I mentioned.

The problem (as I see it) still remains with the MILLION's still lined up behind them.
Something bigger, broader and deeper is required.

I shudder to think what this country is going to look like in 20-30 years when the Generation Y/Millenials begin to ascend into positions of power and authority. The baby Boomers, and to a lesser extent, Generation X have royally screwed them over. Big time. That generation may have short attention spans when it comes to things like popular TV shows and music. But the bailouts, unemployment, housing prices, gas prices, etc.....They aren't going to forget any of that since it all happened during their formative years.

It'll be interesting to see how "settle" that score.
