Wrong.

I wish you weren't, but you are. We now have the one-year exemption, but at this point it may be too late for insurers to get the programs through the bureaucracy and get the commissioner's rubber stamp of approval to sell the plans for 2014. Plus if you're in a state with its own exchange, it's still up in the air. California's exchange hasn't said one way or another whether it will follow the law or ignore the law as the federal government is doing. One of the requirements for selling Obamacare insurance is that it is illegal to then sell non-compliant insurance outside of the exchange. Now, Obama has the federal government will ignore the law but that doesn't mean the state exchanges necessarily will. And then, of course, there's the question of the penalty. Does that apply? I mean, if I could just pay the paltry penalty and keep my own insurance that'd still be better than buying Obamacare insurance.

Caveat emptor indeed. I'm glad I'm still taking the wait and see approach with the mess that is Obama Care. We'll see if my insurer comes back with a price for 2014 and what it is, but we're down to a month now. Still, even a slim chance of avoiding a nearly 70% premium increase for worse insurance is a good thing in my book.

Insurance companies do not want to sell these policies. Of the non-compliant policies that were initially grandfathered for existing prior to March 2010, only 56% made it into 2011, 46% into 2012, and just 36% into 2013. The rest were cancelled. As in no longer offered. By the companies. This is because the plans were dead-end losers that the companies could not make significant changes to without losing their grandfathered status. So, they simply stopped offering the plans. The Obamacare deadline gave them a nice cover to hide behind in dumping the rest right now. But with an extension to 2015, the companies will have to throw good money after bad by offering these plans for another year or they will just go ahead and drop them now and admit that this was their hope and intention all along.

But after dealing with these annoyances, people will be settled again. Their premiums have gone up, but once you get used to the higher price, you will start forgetting about it. Also, fewer people have no insurance, because of the penalties.

In other words, is it possible that in 5 years people will think of the current dark time as a "bump" and Obamacare will just be a part of our lives. It's like going to the dentist: it's a horror, a pain, it costs too much, but afterwards it's like nothing happened.

Or do you see complete catastrophe if Obamacare is not changed?
It depends on who the next president is. If a Democrat wins, I see Obamacare either being re-worked or replaced with single payer. If a Republican wins, it will be completely scrapped.

We already have many government functions that we all deem as a necessary thing to contain the dishonesty found in so much of our our capitalistic model. It's OUR job to control government, and for that to happen WE must be able to have access to that government not just the large corporations.

Every government committee that oversees business regulations, from trucking to food, from education to housing, all have the obligation to look out for the consumer. The one and only reason that these government oversight entities have become corrupted is the fact that business rules and government, by extension, is also ruled. We can't tell business what to do, but, our constitution does obligate us to do for ourselves what business can't or won't do, and that is the regulation of business. This is precisely what a government controlled single payer system would include. Business supremacy in a constitutional democracy can become a worse form of tyranny than any monarchy ever imagined possible. We'll never see a fair system of government if we stand idle in the face of legislative hi-jacking.
Excellent post!

Unfortunately there are huge numbers of people who fall for the lies that huge multinational corporations spend a fortune pushing onto the American people, and people who believe that the politician puppets in both parties actually care about their needs. Anyone who has fallen for the "us vs them" nonsense and wastes all their time fighting for their "side" instead of educating themselves on the intricacies of political issues, and working to understand what is truly happening in the country is part of the problem. Keeping people fighting for a side keeps them from coming together and demanding real changes that benefit the people, not the corporations. How bad do things have to get before people realize it's time to resist the corporate propaganda and demand that the government work for the people?

On the news last night: Obama is going to lengths to distance himself from the name "Obamacare". News clips to back up the story.

I thought it was amusing.

Actually, this is a notion planted by rueful Republicans. They came up with the name intending it to be mocking and derisive. Now they realize that what they have actually done is coin a reminder that will endure for decades telling everyone in earshot just who it was that achieved the victory of the first national health care plan. FDR got Social Security going, and Republicans have been paying for it at the polls ever since. Now they've gone and created yet another albatross to hang around their own necks.
