A must-read article from WaPo. Most Chinese buyers are paying in cash for these properties. This is making it much more difficult for American homebuyers to afford homes in these markets, just like what has happened in Canada and more recently, Australia. I see it myself here in the DC area. What the journalist soft-peddles is that this is the biggest money laundering operation in modern times. The majority of this cash represents ill-gotten gains from corruption and other unsavory, illegal business practices, and we welcome these economic criminals to our shores with open arms?

Our own politicians are chomping at the bit to get a piece of the pie, so don't count on them to do anything. They sold us down the river with globalization; now they're more than happy to sell our own country right out from under us.

Investing in the USA by the affluent is part of globalization. As a quasi free market economy, we will get more of these international customers who value our economic system, appreciate our environment, and seek an American lifestyle. Having money in our economy is a good thing. Many of these people are entrepreneurs who are highly productive and capable people. They are great assets to America. It's been a long way since the Chinese exclusion act, this is what the left has been seeking all these years. Plus these are hardworking people. Why not. They will become Americans too.

This shows many things.
One. Money talks. Working on bettering yourself will bring enormous benefits and realize dreams.
Second, the Chinese system has been much more efficient than any democracy in lifting people out of poverty and enriching the middle class.

These are primarily white collar criminals and money launderers, a far cry from legit entrepreneurs. They earned their fortunes through graft and corruption. I hope one day we sign an extradition treaty with China and send them back to get what's coming to them. But as long as our 'leadership' gets their cut, not much will change.

China's wealth disparity rivals that of the US and the crumbs thrown to the 'middle class' have come at the cost of turning the country into the world's largest toxic dump. Everyone with the means is leaving, as this article shows. Unfortunately, the ones able to leave and buy property here are the very vermin who have destroyed China.

Do you have anything to back up your stance that these people are primarily criminals ?

You are using one brush for a large group of people. Many of these are just successful businessmen. We are a competitor nation with china, so we will never sign extradition treaty with china. It is in our interest to gain this money. The money will go somewhere. Don't you prefer it to be invested in our economy? This is the cycle of globalization.

China's middle class are consuming a lot. If only these super rich people are consuming, china wouldn't be as vibrant as it is. It's their middle class.

China isn't a toxic dump. In urban centers the pollution has been serious. But they are investing enormously to treat their environment. With rising prosperity, they will gradually get better. You are tweaking China's reality to fit American politics, but it's not working. The Chinese are happier than Americans in a recent pew survey. Why is that? Apparently being toxic isn't the only story. The majority of Chinese are proud of their nation's achievements. They believe their government did the right thing realistically in the late 1980s, or they would have become Russia and got laughed at by the west.

China's environment will improve. That is growing pain of a rising nation. We have been there done that. Now it's China's turn. One day they will be much wealthier with improved environment and governance. And they still won't be a democracy, but a republic.

For many Americans today, it seems like anyone who is a business person or has an affluent life is a criminal.

You really are a piece of work. Thanks for the laughs. China is absolutely a toxic dump, even their own government admits as much. Everyone who has the means to leave is establishing a safe haven abroad. Your precious 'middle class' will be left to deal with the mess, and it is too little, too late. But never fear, you can count on the fact that Americans are extraordinarily naive and gullible, and most of them will swallow your 50 cent party pap hook, line and sinker, and welcome these 'hard-working enterprising' money launderers. The 'successful' businessman' in China, one who made his money cleanly, is as rare as the Yangtze dolphin. But as I've stated, our noble leaders can't sell our country down the tubes fast enough. Why not, they are getting their cut. I do feel sorry for all the poor schlubs from China coming here to study on student visas, those of truly modest means. #1, they know exactly the type of people I'm talking about doing these transactions, and revile them even more than I do, and #2, they're the ones who, like it or not, will have to bear the taint by association, when/if Americans wake up to what's going on. I give that about a 25% chance of happening though, because Americans are nothing if not utterly clueless.

By Americans waking up, you mean anti immigrant protests and tea party nonsense? That is already happening.

They said the same thing about Italians, the Irish, the Japanese, and so on and so forth. But we are a nation of immigrants. These Chinese immigrants can later become our citizens.

If a person is investing in the USA, do we care about the origin of their money? And how do we know if it is illegal? You seem to be so sure, but it's a stereotype. And what constitutes illegal money? Many Americans today seem to define anyone with too much money as having illegal money.

It seems to be China's problem to worry about where that money comes from. We are getting the investment, are we not?

Those who came here on student visas also come from all walks of life, some middle and some rich. Different people lead different lives. Why is that such a problem? They may not have wealth, but then they have education and skills. Again, we benefit from that don't we? Why can't we get both talent and money? If people start targeting Chinese students, then we will have to stop that. These students are also paying international tuition, which enables our universities to function without financial difficulties. If they are on some assistant ships, then they are working hard and helping the university save labor cost.

Have you provided proof that they are not? IF American businessmen are corrupt why are the Chinese millionaires less corrupt?

Have you really met an American millionaire who made his money honestly? Either they are abusing their workers or manipulating something that affects others.

Oh yeah, and the traditional Chinese moneymakers hold on to their age old customs.
