Of note is how pretty much every southern state can't pay people a decent wage. A few northern states can't as well, but considering the high cost of living, a high wage wont solve the issue.
This is only about fast food workers. Those jobs originally were for teens and college students. The outlets became so popular, though, that they've run out of teens available or willing to work there. There server/cook jobs were never intended to be career jobs. Only part-time student jobs.

Retail and restaurants seem to be where most of the job creation is going around here in the Appalachians. And retail pays as well as restaurants do, if that. There just aren't enough jobs for people to have a decent life on.

Actually, factor in the cost of living in Southern states, and suddenly Southerners come out ahead. Look at the Census Bureau's own numbers on this count.
I agree. The jobs in my area tend to mostly be fast food and retail, some factory and warehouse jobs too that aren't much good for anything. The pay is also going down hill. The mall use to have more stable retail in it. Now, businesses in the mall are closing down or switching elsewhere. They don't seem to last.
Fast food is NOT a lifetime career. It's an excellent stepping stone to future jobs (I worked a low-wage job in high school/college - which I paid for myself) but it is NOT a long-term career path. The problem is many people seem to think they can work in fast food for the rest of their lives.

Why is this such a prevalent defense? It's like someone saying 'Aids was only meant for gay people'. If they're only for young people and not to be career jobs, then they need to hire adults in for management and corporate jobs only and once you hit 18 need to put you on the path into management. How about you see to that getting implemented, until then stop using that excuse. Oh, and btw, almost all store positions, sometimes even store manager positions barely pay enough to get by.

Well they love to try and keep the minimum wage at the lowest possible, and would probably lower or abolish there's if the federal government allowed them too.
