Both are important, but low gas prices has an immediate positive effect on the economy, with people spending that money on other things, hopefully fuel surcharges reduced or dropped on deliveries, more vacation car travel so restaurants and hotels get more business. Energy independence has a more long-term effect so is more of a goal, but in time could result in higher gas prices.
Economic independence is a worthy goal. Of course we are now a part of a global economy and always will be. This is different than having our hands out and begging the middle easterners who hate us to please, please give us your nice oil. If we do not keep some leverage, we are foolish.

Will the destruction or delay in achieving American energy independence, increase the likelihood that the United States will get involved in another Petro war in the future ?
American energy independence is simple; convert our entire power industry to solar. The sun has enough energy to power the world dozens of times over for the next five billion years.
HOWEVER, solar power is accessible to all. Therefore, capitalists don't profit off it in the same capacity as oil.

im pretty sure capitalists can profit off solar power if it makes economic sense. you come up with this silly reason when the real reason is the cost is too high. im hopeful it will go down and then it will grow quickly. no need to be ridiculous, capitalists will do their magic.

How can something with virtually no operating costs be "too expensive?"
That's asinine. The reason its cost is too high is the energy companies and their lobbying.

**** low gas prices. Go green, baby.
There needs to be a third option - "climate issues".

(Hint: crony capitalism)
How do you figure that? The solar panels and batteries have to be manufactured and paid for. The land has to bought unless you are talking about a residential installation, but that is the least efficient method. As it stands, solar has achieved grid parity in only a few states. In most states you will spend more to purchase solar/wind, but you will still purchase from an energy company.
