The BLS just pulled 281,000 out of its butt and added it to the actual total of 11,000. They can make up any number they want and the media will report it. Deception? Of course. Propaganda? Most assuredly. The Fed wants a big number and a hired gun gave it to them. It's easy to find a deceiving statistician if the government job grade is high enough.
They stopped counting military 1994, it raised the unemployment rate by a tenth of a percent.
Like richrf you don't seem to understand what cooking the books means, it implies deception. The overhaul in 1994 published that they were no longer counting military, published what they expected the impact on the numbers to be, and listed the reasons for making that decision.
At this point you "cooked the books" people are making even less sense by pointing out decisions to include/exclude the military. Excluding the military in 1994 cooked the books to raise the unemployment rate, other nefarious tricks to lower it? Which one is it? I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess you'll decide any changes to methodology that lowered the unemployment rate counts as cooking the books but changes that raised the unemployment rate are not.

The only conspiracy going on in this forum are the rah, rah stock boys who are trying to keep hard working people all in. Can't let them leave the Casino while they have some money still in their pockets. Huh?

Taken with a grain of salt since you've been in cash for decades

Wouldn't have it any other way. I don't gamble with my future, and I certainly don't gamble in a rigged game.

Just pulled 10 years of data from BLS. The difference between seasonally adjusted and not seasonally adjusted is remarkably consistent from year to year for any given month.
You may disagree with the methodology, but that doesn't constitute cooking the books.'

Richrf loves to blather about how all these people who invest in the stock/bond market are big gamblers, while by staying in cash he has gambled that interest rates on cash equivalents will generate positive real returns. This is a gamble he has lost with his savings account and 0.1% interest rate.
