Well something will have to give once the majority are unemployed. So far you haven't exactly convinced me your solution of letting people die in the streets is a good idea.
Well unemployment is 5% now.
I'll worry when unemployment is closer to 100%.
There are not enough rich people to support an annual $3-4 trillion dollar giveaway to the government each and every year from now to eternity.
A sensible amount of BI would be ~$8k/yr or 15% of GDP, ~$2.7T. This would eliminate gov aid programs and their bureaucracies, and also reduce SS payments by $8k. Net cost would be <10% of GDP and maybe less than 5%.
The total US tax burden is ~26% of GDP, much lower than other developed countries. Even if you bumped that by 10%, we'd still rank low on taxes.

You need to keep the welfare programs for the illegals.
So you are going to give people money and hike their taxes ?
You just cancelled it out.
You guys know I'm not in favor of this "basic income"...
but let's imagine it was real... do you guys think $100/month would even help you guys?
Remember social security is about $1,300/month... basic income would be "1/3" of it? 1/4? 1/5? What?
Already people claim to "struggle" on social security...
and we can't even go a year without congress pointing out that SS is almost out of money... So where is this "magic" basic income coming from? If SS is on its death bed, and it has it's own special FICA tax, where would basic income tax come from when people on it refuse to work?
"Print money"? That's the idea of this?
Maybe you guys will be successful in talking all the retirees out of SS and tell them in place of SS, you'll give them a lower amount each month so everyone can "share" it?
So, how is that different than current tax refund?
You get some % of what you make back.
If you take say 22% of every bodies money and give it back as a check for $8k each (in monthly installments) then if you earn $5k you'll pay 22% or $1100, but get $8k. The people that need the money most get it, the people that have plenty share. A lot of benefits. Soft bounce for being out of work on the bottom end. If you want extra money you can go out and get it. With SSI they take it or kick you off if they find out. Much nicer and kinder. Being nice to people pays off in the long term. It is a good investment.
