I got a good scare buying gas at a gas station tonite, I gave him a $20 for $13 of gas. As always, he puts the $20 bill through a machine to detect if it's counterfeit or not.
So I asked him how often does he runs across counterfeit money, and he replied quite often! He told me the night before, someone came in to buy $1.75 worth of gas, and the two One dollar bills turned out to be counterfeit!
More shocking, scary, he told me, 2 months ago, he went to the Boulder Station Casino to cash his payroll check, and? He was given 2 fake $100 bills! Holy Jesus! You'd think a Casino, of all places, would check for counterfeit money. He ended up facing a 45 minute ordeal with management and security! What a nightmare!
I once knew a woman who received a counterfeit $50 bill, unknown to her, and she was out to dinner with her husband, on a trip, and, shockingly, she found out it was a counterfeit $50. She got it from, again, a casino hotel in Las Vegas.
So, perhaps, it's more common here in Las Vegas, who knows! Does this happen in other parts of the country? And has it ever happened to you?
Now on, don't even know how to detect a counterfeit bill, I'm going to be extra vigilant on receiving change. And, even with the vigilance, how will I know I've got counterfeit money?
Nevertheless, the truck's VIN would have quickly led to the truck's current owner, and nobody actually counterfeits $1 bills. There are plenty of stupid people out there though, so many do try counterfeiting as an alternative to running a meth lab or whatever was their second best option. The feds take every case reported very seriously however, so it's quite the loser's game.

His downfall was creating a die from the front of one nickel and the back of another nickel - but that reverse had never been minted matched to the date of the obverse he chose. Pretty soon collectors were finding this strange new nickel variety, and the Secret Service realized it had a counterfeiter out there.

Never. I worked in a bank for years and could pick out a fake just by touch. I can spot a fake handbag a mile away also.
Either myself or my coworker took in a counterfeit $20 a few years back. We didn't know until our finance department deposited it and the bank told them. We got a stern email from finance that we read then deleted. There isn't a whole lot you can do about that at a busy, cash only counter with shoebox for a money drawer. Demanding we know how to spot a fake is asking too much given the circumstances we work under.

I got given a snide £20 from a tiny newsagents the other side of London years ago after buying cigarettes with a £50.
It was on a boozy night out and wasn't quite " with it " shall we say but it's so obvious it was fake it's laughable.....And I still missed it LMAO
If you handle bills regularly and don't have one already, a black-light pen would be a must. Basic models cost less than $20. There are security strips on real bills that glow the following colors under UV light...
$5 – Right side. Glows blue.
$10 – Right side. Glows orange.
$20 – Far left side. Glows green.
$50 – Near the middle. Glows yellow.
$100 – Left side. Glows pink.
