...Most of the people on the highest rung in America are in denial about their privilege. The American myth of meritocracy allows them to attribute their position to their brilliance and diligence, rather than to luck or a rigged system.

This guy has some kind of mental problem.

Why should anyone feel guilty for having money and sending their kids to private school?

Or maybe he wrote this article during one of those drunk binges.

Ah, a member of the 1% telling the next 19% to feel guilty. Sorry, no.

To answer your questions about why someone might feel guilty about sending their kids to private school: Hypocrisy. Is that really so impossible for you to understand?

The basic takeaway is that the upper middle class uses its money and other advantages, primarily access to educational rites of passage, but also some things like zoning to preserve/strengthen gentrification, as leverage to help their kids remain upper middle class.

Yeah, pretty much true. Not gonna lie. Pretty much every parent I know sends their kids to the absolute best schools they can afford, and/or live in the best possible neighborhoods they can afford, in an attempt to erect fortress-walls around the status they've got and preferably increase it if possible. They do this regardless of their professed ideology.

Yup.

What exactly is hypocritical about going to private school?

It is impossible to understand bc it makes no sense.

Exactly. They pay property taxes for schools their kids don't even attend.

I would disagree. Not every parent sends their kids to best private school or live in the best possible neighborhoods.
Sure, people want more and more, higher and better, that's in our nature, but it doesn't necessary means that they are out of touch with reality.
You know people who do that and I know people who don't. Of course I know plenty of snobs, too.:-)

I think it depends where these people come from and what are their real values.

Interesting article but I'm not sure why people should feel guilt because they have money, and want to give their families the very best.

Liberal minded wealthy are an interesting group. They speak on wanting to stop inequality in society and to do more for the poor and underprivileged, but not at the convenience of their lifestyle and privilege. They also tend to not donate as much as wealthy conservatives do to different causes. Perhaps its newer money and they aren't so confident of the money lasting for generations?

Celebrities are the most visible group in this regard, but I guess politicians do as well, but just hide it better.
