I have never used Western Union, and I'm 65. I do remember once that my father got a telegram, when I was about 6 or 7.
Now it seems like ACH, PayPal and other E-Payment systems are a lot easier to use for sending money to people.

If you don't have a bank account there are only but so many ways to send or receive money. Western Union, PayPal and a few others, but that is pretty much about all.

There is a Western Union at store/24 in our street, and it is busy all hours of day and night. Also no, not just with "immigrants" either.

So many people are unbanked, and as such need a way to send money not just to other persons, but to make credit card or some such payment that is past due or whatever. Again you cannot use ACH or other bank based transfers if you don't have an account.

Western Union is still helpful when you need money in a pinch. In the last 5 years, I've probably used it 20 times or so. But there's not one near me, so it really needs to be an emergency for me to use it. If I can wait one business day (and it's not over a weekend), I'll just ask for a deposit straight to my bank account.
