It still can happen with a favorable locale, business, endurance, timing and luck.
Took me about 40 years as a lower doc income internist.

Even defining middle class is difficult, many opinions related to it's financial health are slanted simply by shaping the definition.

It is hard to gauge because I bet a lot of people who have moved up live in locations where the COL is so high that they really haven't moved up that much with respect to standard of living.

Instead of out right figures based on income, they really need to break it down on what you get for your money. I know plenty of six figure earners who are barely getting by in high COL locations, while six figure earners where I live are living like kings.

I say Americans are middle class if they are able to buy a home, whether of not they do so.

many people consider themselves middle class when in reality they are dirt poor. Just because someone will loan you money to buy a nice car doesn't mean a thing. I laugh at people I know to be poor making $500 lease payments on vehicles I know they can't afford. More dumb decisions by dumb people.

The standard of living in high COL areas may be a good deal higher than in low COL area. It depends on what you put into your imagination of what standard of living means to begin with.

And many people consider themselves middle class when in reality they are at least borderline wealthy. For whatever reason, identifying as part of the middle class is taken to be a good thing by many.

If they are making the payments they obviously can afford to. Just because someone spends their money in ways you deem foolish does not make them "poor". They may just have different priorities.

the range of those who call themselves just middle class here in nyc is very very wide .

there really is no actual definition and it is more location linked than anything else
