I think I understand the concept of Chained CPI adjusting for downsizing from 1BR to studio apartment to SRO room. But to what does it chain after SRO room?

i.e. how does it deal with the lowest link in the chain where there are no substitutes left?

Van down by the river.

Government cheese can be substituted for everything you eat.

If you move to a bigger van or a van with WiFi, they will hedonically adjust your imputed rent downward.

Below a van would be a car. If you go to a six-cylinder engine car instead of a four-cylinder engine car, your rent falls by one-third according to hedonic adjustment.

I've heard 30 percent now are in shared housing arrangements as housing has gotten so expensive.

They are building shared housing or co-living apartments where as many as 8 to 12 unrelated adults share a suite with a common living room, kitchen, and bathroom.

Maybe Congress should have read the bill before they passed it.

I have an acquaintance who works at a fast food establishment in a medium-sized town in Nebraska.

She lives in a decent 2-bedroom apartment in a safe neighborhood. She has a serviceable car. She has health insurance.

She moved from California because it was too expensive.

Her health and mood have improved since she relocated. She has an emergency account and an IRA. She had lived in California all her life, but she says her life is better since she moved.

There is life beyond the western fringe of the nation.
