In terms of drug development and other medical research, a lot of that also gets outsourced to the government, universities both public and private, and other non-profits because it's seen as too long term, too general, or not likely to generate enough revenue. IIRC, big pharma is not terribly interested in next generation antibiotic development because they can make more money on the next adult enhancement pill, even though there's a strong need to those antibiotics because of increased resistance to antibiotics we've already got available for treatment.

This discussion would be a lot more interesting and productive if all the participants clearly understood (or chose to understand) the considerable differences between non-profit, not-for-profit, and unprofitable.

Those who read my OP as "no one should make any money from healthcare" are noted. Not in a good way.
