Bitcoin is unstable because it is a nascent asset whose primary purpose appears to be hedging against inflation. It quacks like a non-physical alternative to gold, but its newness renders it too weird to settle into its hedging role.

I don't know if it was "engineered" to swing wildly, but all it is to me right now is speculation.
