It is a side effect of militarizing electronic equipment that's used in both commercial and weapons systems. Other countries seek to replace hardware and software that's not riddled with NSA spyware and malware. US manufacturers insert backdoors and kill switches into firmware on the orders of the NSA as recently disclosed by Intel.

You have to buy base electronics and know how to program them and possibly even use solidworks to design out your own circuits and maybe use some base level devices that solder on to the board.

But yes if you use some pre-packaged device then your taking a risk. But its not like you have to build all your own op amps just to avoid the kill switches.

so yes you have to know what you are doing but you dont have to crush up your own copper ore and extrude your own wire to avoid tainted electronics.
