Oakbrook Mall in Oak Brook, IL is a little surprising to me as it's an "outdoor" mall. My DH actually works right across the street from it. I guess it shouldn't be a surprise though, because Oak Brook is only 30 minutes from downtown Chicago and is surrounded by wealthy communities like Hinsdale, Burr Ridge and Naperville. The majority of stores there are also high end, with little for the average person. I guess people would rather travel to shop there than on the magnificent mile in downtown Chicago?

I wonder what the value is of the West Edmonton Mall,
largest mall in North America....tenth largest in the world.

Over 800 stores, 24,000 employees, 50 anchor stores,
has a waterpark, ice rink, even a hotel.

Hopefully someone can dig up some financial stats,
might be tough....as it is in more secretive Canada

Crazy thing is it located in a city of only 1.3 million, Edmonton,
but aparently gets 32 million customer visits per year.

I don't see as many little boutique stores as I used to. Those seemed to have started dying away, also.

Surprised Mall of America isn't on the list. Notice how many are Simon properties? One on the list is an outlet mall....not sure I would rank an outlet the same as the others.

Instant cameras have made a comeback. Polaroid still exists and makes instant cameras.

Well, for certain values of "still exists." It's a reformulated company that makes instant cameras for a small, dedicated retro niche and artistes. IIRC, the film was only made by secondary producers for a decade or so before "Polaroid" reappeared making name-brand film and updated cameras.

And that's what malls have done, more or less - reinvented themselves every 20 years or so, which they will continue to do.

Yes, Polaroid (the brand) cameras are VERY popular right now.

Back on topic re malls:

I detest most malls, especially those that have limited entries.

The only mall where I actually enjoy shopping is Stanford Shopping Center, an upscale open air shopping mall, near the campus in Palo Alto.

The four major department stores are Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom. Bullock's used to be one of the anchors, until it sold to Nordstrom.

I used to enjoy grocery shopping at Andronico's, but it closed seven years ago and was replaced by the Container Store.
