Scrooge was a bad man. there are other ways to be a crappy human than to do some thing illegal. and comparing Scrooge to politicians and unethical business guys kind of tells you his character. lol
Basically he care more for money than any thing else in his world. ANYTHING. He dumped his fiancee mainly because she didn't come with a boatload of cash as a dowry.
so maybe we should redefine him, he was a class A &&^hole.
One of Reagan's appointees, I think it was Ed Meese, pointed out that Scrooge was the victim of bad press, and Bob Cratchtt didn/t have it so bad. Scrooge paid him well enough that he lived in a house with garden, not a tenement. His wife didn't have to have an outside job. Tiny Tim's doctor made house calls. They could afford goose and plum pudding for holiday dinner.
People who spend time trying to cast Scrooge in a good light are the sort of people who value a cent more than basic humanity. Those who want to care about nothing more than the balance sheet are free to do so. However, they should not expect a pat on the head and validation from the world at large. They're certainly not going to get it from me.
(and if they can't handle that, then aren't they quite the snowflakes!)

Scrooge was indeed a sad and bad man. Anyone trying to defend him is equally pathetic and bad.
He forget the real reason to be doing all that he did every day.

This. Plus, he wasn't just a miser, he'd become a complete misanthrope. It wouldn't have cost him a penny to dine with his nephew Fred, or to treat Bob Cratchitt more civilly, or to toss a kind word to the carolers singing on the street corner when he passed them. It wasn't just Scrooge's purse strings that were in need of loosening.
I don't think Scrooge meets the criteria of Sociopath, which pretty well encompasses the constituency of the truly evil. Sociopaths, unlike Scrooge, are incurable in their lack of empathy and remorse, and go out of their way to make people miserable.
