Ha! This was exactly my question when I first saw the new form format.
My vote is to mimic the old way. They'll know.

Both this years and last years Fed 1040 form & instructions only say to "attach" W-2s & 1099s.
None say how to attach, staple, tape, glue or otherwise.
If I had paper filed, I would have stapled them on back of new shorter 1040 form as I think they want the Name area left clear. This based on the past practice of attaching them in the middle of the old long form.
I do not staple mine and have not in a long time. Just fold it up into the form.
