My wife and I own a retail store. One of our employees has been with us for 15 years. He is now in his late 50s. He is more than an employee to us but is actually like a friend, since we've known him so long. He has never missed a day, never been late, never no called/no showed. He is in a manager position and we count on him to run things when we are away.

Starting last year I began receiving complaints from our customers about this employee. The complaints were all the same...the employee was "being rude". The complaints started coming more and more often. Then last month, the employee got into it with a customer about a lost receipt and the employee dragged the customer out of the office by his throat and threatened to pound his head into the pavement. I saw on several occasions where the employee told customers the computers were down and couldn't help them and to leave. I also saw him greet customers by saying "what do you want". The employee started bringing his dog to the office every day and let it run around the store unleashed. The dog was aggressive and it bit 5 customers, attacked one person who ended up in the hospital due to bites. Thank goodness we never got sued. We told the employee not to bring the dog and he told my wife "he goes where I go".

I started watching security video and saw the employee taking $ out of the cash register. Every day that he works he palms a $20 or a few $20 bills out of the register. He is so bold about it I'm assuming he has been doing it for years. He's not even the least bit nervous. I also saw him telling customers the cc machine is down and they had to pay cash, then the pockets the cash. I also saw him being extremely rude to customers and actually egging customers on to start verbally arguing with him and telling customers to go ahead and leave negative Yelp reviews. He is 6'4" 230lbs and very imposing and his demeanor was threatening to people.

I talked to my wife and told her I feel this employee has just gotten so comfortable he thinks he can do what he wants and think we are dependent on him. I say that we should terminate him, but my wife is all emotional about it and doesn't want him to lose his job. Looking for advice from other business owners here about what course of action we should take and any opinions. Thanks for your help.

Holy crap you are going to get sued! He should have been gone a long time ago. This could get problematic. Time to CYA.

Terminate, and file charges.

Here in my state if a dog bites ONCE, the owner is ON NOTICE that the dog bites. If the dog bites a SECOND time, the dog is ordered to be put down.
You are VERY LUCKY you weren't sued, as I'd have sued the pants off you for everything the stores is in value of AND your personal property if you allowed an employee to bring a biting dog to work.

And if the stealing amounts to a high enough value, its GRAND THEFT.

If you just let him go he'll pull something on you like suing you for wrongful termination, right or wrong win or lose the media can have a field day and damage done. Its easier to be proactive than to do damage control.

The very first time the dog bit someone in your store, you should have put your foot down and demanded the dog never comes into the store again. If he doesn't/didnt like it, I'd have shown him the door and the last paycheck.

Grow a pair, put on your big boy pants and be an adult, file charges and have him arrested and terminate him, TODAY. Call the police to come while he is there working, and if the dog bites the officer/s it'll be his last bite, I assure you.

This employee, friendly or not, is ruining your business. Nip it in the bud NOW. TODAY.

And NO "friend" steals from you if they are a true friend.

Youve let him take advantage of you. If you dont do something NOW, your a doormat hes walking all over.

It stops NOW. TODAY.

Its obvious he doesnt give a rats a$$ about you and your store, why get emotional over him losing his job. Hes snowed you big time.

If you dobt get rid of him NOW, hell absolutely ruin your business if he hasnt already.

DO IT NOW, file charges and have him arrested when hes at the store and doesn't see it coming. Do it behind the wifes back if you have to, as i said grow a pair and DO IT.

Or dont complain to us anymore about it/him.

He's been with you 15 years and you're just now noticing bad behavior? Either you're a very bad judge of character or there's something recent going on with this guy that maybe he needs help with. Depression, dementia, brain tumor, drugs, who knows, but he needs to be done dealing with the public for now, and probably needs to seek some kind of professional help.

You’ve posted this in the work and employment forum before.

The stealing of cash from the drawer requires termination with no second thoughts. Their tenure with the company is irrelevent. In fact, fraud is more often perpetuated by the people with longer tenure, more trust, more access, ect.

A family friend should be more responsible. More accountable. Like they say on the show intervention, you wouldn’t tolerate that behavior from an ENEMY. Don’t let emotions allow you to tolerate it just because someone is family or like family. Their standard of behavior should be even higher, not less.

That is not just theft, you have a violent person working for you with serious aggressive behavior. Let this person go right now, probably with a security guard escorting him in case he turns belligerent on the way out the door.

Yeah. OP invested a lot of time publishing his first fictional short story for our entertainment.

Anybody believe that the customer didn't file charges? Anybody believe that the owner would have kept this employee? FIVE people were bitten by the dog and NOBODY reported it?

Anybody who believes this claptrap, I gotta bridge to sell you.
