Default Sarkozy Pandering?

Hundreds of truckers shut down a central London highway Tuesday, French fishermen blockaded ports and French President Nicolas Sarkozy proposed cutting European fuel taxes as already high gasoline prices soared even higher.

Well lookee here. The French President proposes cutting European fuel taxes. He must be pandering. There must be an election near.

As an example reported in the article, the British government imposes an equivalent $3.77 per gallon fuel duty plus a 17.5% consumption tax. Even the thought of reducting taxes over there must send shivers up the spine of those who want higher fuel taxes in this country to reduce our driving.

I smile inwardly as I observe what is going to transpire, to the dismay of some.

don't. I paid cash for the SUV, I pay cash for the gasoline I put in it.
But you don't pay for the added population you cause, nor do you pay for putting other drivers at a higher risk. I would've purchased an even smaller car than I did if it wasn't for all the monster trucks and SUVs around.

These are externalities that you don't get charged for but should, the current gas prices are creating a sort of externality charge that is now causing people to rethink they're behavior. Its not about making something illegal its about paying the full costs for your actions, currently people who drive SUVs do not.

My sedan gets 10-14MPG on a good day.... Yet, folks will give me more crap about my SUV than they would about my sedan based on what I'm reading.
Its all cars that get poor MPG, but at least your sedan doesn't force others to buy bringer cars or risk death.

don't worry most people get the picture, it's just the odd ....... who doesn't understand that SUV has become synonomous with excessive gas consumption

I am putting your life at risk by driving an SUV?
SUV owners put other drivers at a higher risk?

I guess my spotless driving record (25 plus years) means nothing since I drive an SUV.

Just think of all the American Workers that had jobs because Americans bought SUV's... if you want to talk about true costs...

I'm all for everyone paying the full costs of their actions... we should start by eliminating all subsidies to those that ride mass transit... get rid of the light rail property taxes... stop siphoning off the highway and road fuel tax to pay for projects no one uses.

What about Housing Assistance, Student Loans, Grants for the Arts... the list goes on and on, school lunches AFDC, Alameda Alliance Low Income Heath Care, Subsidizes Low Income Telephone Service, Water and Electric Low Income Rates subsidized by all rate payers...

This is just a slippery slope. The things you are mentioning are of a completely different nature. These things are done for the greater good of society, whether they end up doing good is a different question. If they don't then get rid of them. The idea is that everyone pays for them because they benefit everyone in the end. Now, how do SUVs benefit everyone? Why should a SUV owner not pay the true (or at least close to it) cost of their choice? Cars with high MPG damage the environment more than cars with low MPG, currently the SUV owner does pay more of this. They end up paying more fuel tax, but is it enough? Probably not. They also make the road a more dangerous place for everyone, many people buy SUVs simply because driving a smaller car is too risky because so many others drive SUVs. Of course once everyone has a SUV you are back to square one, that is why cars keep getting bigger and bigger! The game would stop, if the government charged for externalities in the right sort of way.

Yes, it should be obvious that an accident between a SUV and a smaller car ends up with the smaller car getting the short stick. That is after all, why most people buy SUVs in the first place. They are "safe", but that safety comes at a cost.

These are hard externalities to charge for though, the best way to handle it is probably lower taxes else where and raise fuel taxes.
