Every day it seems like another large company is announcing that it is laying off employees. While this news is interesting for the reader, it does not do a very good job at really describing what is really happening to our labor force.

90% of Americans work for companies that have less than 100 employees. These are the real employers in America. I know quite a few people who have been laid off or fired from these small companies in the last few months. A few had been there for years and years and had told me that they had been unconcerned about losing their job because their small company was running so lean anyway. But now somehow they are surviving without these employees.

My point: Many people who think they are safe in their job who have worked for a small company in a safe position for years are expendable in today's economy.

Layoff Daily

Big and small alike, are all expendable. Jobs being slashed by the thousands...daily. Each report, is a link to the corresponding article.

After NBC reported that there were 50,000 layoffs today, I did a quick count on the site referenced above, for today's numbers only......right around 71,500. Certainly must be some sort of record for one day? As mentioned..big and small alike. A couple of larger companies cutting as many as 7,000 jobs in one fell swoop.

I agree. Many of the smaller companies have more flexibility. I know more than a couple people who have taken salry cuts or are only being paid for 9 of 10 days.
