The point is, people who keep blabbing about the huge cost of socialized medicine, neglect to see that, likely, we could REDUCE the cost per person we are spending by socializing.
With socialized medicine, nobody will ever pay $15 for a tylenol. That is fact. Removing profiteering healthcare conglomerates and the worthless third party insurance beauracracy out of the picture would reduce costs by half, at least.
They won't get removed..they'll be getting their money from the government. Then tylenol will cost $25/pill because everyone knows how well the government keeps track of what they spend.
Big Pharma is not against universal healthcare..it's their holy grail cash cow.
I really don't get the case against socialized medicine. What most Americans seemingly don't understand is the fact that 72% of our healthcare is already "socialized," or paid by the government. They simply don't go far enough to cover people under a rational, logical plan. In a country with as much wealth as ours to allow 55 million people to be without it and many more to be on the brink of losing something so basic as health care is EMBARRASSING. When will our population stop listening to talking points derived by the Right Wing to undermine the Left politically? People, you need to do your own research and stop watching talking heads tell you what to believe. I, personally, am an educated, gun-owning, fiscally conservative realist who believes in socialized medicine and abortion. Half of that wouldn't fly with either the right or the left. Start thinking for YOURSELF!
P.S. OP, it's pretty transparent why you only mentioned one nation. And that's unfortunate that you have such an agenda. There are many more nations that provide the basic necessities such as healthcare. Aren't you embarrassed that Saudi Arabia provides more for its citizens than we do? The W.H.O has the U.S. ranked #36 in the world in healthcare. Isn't that embarrassing? It is for me.

I'm in favor of guns, abortion in certain circumstances, in favor of opposite marriages but have no issue if gay people would have the same rights as long as they would call it different as a marriage since IMO that is between a man and a woman, against government interfering too much as Obama is doing right now!

Houston, I have read that a few times now. That every kid is entitled to a free education applies only through High School but now there's talk of College as well since the bar is raised and college is almost required for any decent job these days..even a 2 year degree is sometime required for secretarial/administrative work.
In the long run this would change the face of Colleges. Public colleges would be degree mills, churning out countless numbers of unqualified graduates to meet numbers just like it's done in high schools today to meet Federal quotas and get Federal money.
I mean..how can someone graduate high school and receive a diploma and be illiterate ?
Even in the socialized countries where only public schools (paid by high income taxes) are...the Colleges aren't for free. Students either have student loans or parents are paying for them...

Socialism is a point on a line, not a specific set of values. Socialism is a buzz word like liberal and neo-con that is supposed to give you a sense of fear, or cause a reaction.
Bush was as much a "socialist" by a true definition as Obama. TARP etc. was put in place by the Republicans, and even at that, it's not socialism. You can agree or disagree with the actions (or inactions) of this or previous administrations, but you are deluding yourself if all of a sudden 200+ years of states rights, and history disappear because the Government takes action in a time of crisis.
So during WWII, when the government rationed fuel, food, dictated manufacturing, and controlled the economy with an iron fist, that was socialist, but was warranted during a time of need. We aren't at war, but there is a crisis, and everyone should stop and step back and see how we can help each other. Taking action for the common good isn't socialist, it just makes sense.
Oh no, another Obama is socialist thread...he will ruin the entire US because the nation chose him over McCain. Considering a Dow drop of 50% I hope some one in the government would do something, if they didn't people would be complaining that the government doesn't care or isn't doing enough. Damned if you do, and damned if you don't. Screw the naysayers, let's get things back on track...plus if people have to deal with some one in the office who lost he popular vote and get over it, get over the election of the guy who actually did get the votes.
It's Keynesian economic policies he is implementing, read up on it, it was used throughout the world after WW2 through the middle 1970's when economies were floundering. If the policies are socialist now, you pretty much have to classify most of the world as socialist economies then as well.
A small country like The Netherlands has a debt of over 346 billion Euro's!
This country has 16.5 mill people living there and fits 3 times Florida, so start preparing if Obama succeed's to have socialized health (s)care, and all of his other socialism plans.....
Per person the debt is 21,000 Euro...babies, toddlers, teenagers, babyboomers, elderly people ...all people of Holland incl...21,000.- per person debt...and this isn't the end!
I'm surprised no one called out Bentlebee on his dishonest reporting here. Before the financial crisis the Netherlands only had a debt of 40% of GDP, much less than the US. It is due the bailouts that the debt has soared. If that's socialism to you, then the US is the biggest socialist of them all right now.
