In trading we don't have time to ask why in a fast moving market. It's after the trade that we ask why so we might learn from it. Huge gain on Monday! According to most news source, investor confidence is restored because of the government bailout, excuse me, rescue plan. But we have heard this before and it didn't work. Why does it work now? I think it has something to do with the US government buying stakes in bank. Now if you are a seller, there is no better buyer than the US government with its printing press and taxpayers money. I believe there are traders and investors who believe that the US government will step in and buy stocks from them in the future. I wonder if some of them missed the fact that Uncle Sam will be buying preferred stocks, which have nothing to do with common stocks.

I have the sense that stock markets worldwide are reacting to the coordinated set of measures designed, most of all, to avert a depression.

To be sure, we still have a sharp recession to deal with and there is every chance that stock markets will drift lower over the next six months to two years or who knows how long.

Look, we are fooling ourselves if we believe that we live in a free market environment; we have been and will continue to live in a hodgepodge of free markets, manipulated markets, and various forms of socialism, and globalization in this muddled framework is set to deepen, not necessarily accelerate, but deepen.

Now, short of a totalitarian regime, we are all more or less free to arrange our affairs and place our bets in this environment, in part according to one's skills and in part according to the hand that is dealt, both by nature and the social environment.

Good luck!

Actually it's quite appropriate if you imagine the latest measures as a surge of vital blood injected into the world financial organ.

But it can't stay propped up forever, it has to come down eventually.

Hopefully the thread title didn't offend anyone. I borrowed the language from the movie "Kate & Leopold". In this movie, a character time traveled to the past when language usage was different.
