I had my identity stolen and have been clearing my name with the three bureaus. Any time some new fraud appears in my credit history, I contact them and the company with police reports and other documentation to prove it wasn't me. So far, I've cleaned all the fraud up and am waiting for my credit score to be recalculated. Based on my research, my scores should go up at least 90-110 points in the next month or two.
While I'm thrilled about this, I'm always nervous because I don't know when another fraudulent account may pop up on my credit history. Most of the fraud I have discovered happened 8 mos to a year before I found out about them. I have a seven year fraud alert with each agency; but this is only to prevent fraud in the future.
How can a company like Lifelock intervene in situations in which the fraud took place in the past? What do you think of Lifelock or other companies that provide identity protection services?
Also, I tried getting the Social Security Administration to change my SSN, but they refused. They say I should just deal with each instance of fraud as it happens.
!! I can't believe that an innocent person has no recourse, and is forced to be in a continual battle against an identity thief and creditors. What's the best way to get a SSN changed? How much do lawyers charge for this?
