Cost of Living Calculations (tax, housing costs, work, housing)

I asked this question in a thread already talking about Cost of Living comparisons between cities, but I feel it is worthy of its own discussion.


What website / online calculator do you all use to compare the cost of living for different cities? With so many out there, I do not know which is the most accurate. They vary like crazy.

Sure, you can do your own research on housing costs, but that seems like too much work if there is some reliable source out there already. What do you all do?

The cost of living in a given city/area is going to depend on you, and how well you are willing/able to adapt to the local area. Some places tax new/expensive cars heavily, some places like NY tax anything and everything - but in NY you can, if you choose to, live in a small apartment/condo and not own a car...wouldn't be for me, but it might work for some people.
