I love reading posts by people who have done absolutely zero research into their position, but are damn passionate about it anyways.
Unless you reduce your total consumption of oil products, a boycott is irrelevant. You will certainly hurt local stations, owned by local franchisees, but if they have excess supplies of oil they will just sell it to their competitors to sell to their stations. Zero impact on the corporation itself.
Actually the US arm of BP could be spun off. Anythings possible, its a new ball game with the worst environmental disaster in the history of our country. The only way for BP to survive the endless liabilities would be for the Government to take over the US part of the company. Before this is over, maybe very soon, BP will announce the possibility of taking Bankruptcy.. They have no intentions of paying all the costs related to their " spill". Turning over the Company in the US to the Government would limit their liability, save face for the Government, and somewhat satisfy the Brits. The Dividends will not be paid out, anytime soon.
I hope that doesn't happen. I don't have any confidence the government will do any better running an oil company.
The government can't even run it's own affairs properly and anytime government runs an industry it's a disaster. See Soviet Union and North Korea.
We are not any of those countries. far from it. I guess you think the Post Office is one of those Industries?.... Polls have indicated that most people do not want the PO privatized. They also want sat. delivery. Same goes for Social Security,..the vast majority want a hands off policy.
You see, its all or nothing when you speak about bad Government, or big Government. Can't say one thing is OK , then bash other programs, protections, and Government run businesses..... If you are for a pure Libertarian path, then get behind Ron Paul and his Son...talk the talk and walk the walk, or , say nothing at all.

The PO is hugely inefficient and would have been out of business as a private company years ago.

Social Security is a ponzi scheme.
OK , but you did not say what to do to fix it ? privatize?, both?....or try to improve the services we enjoy as citizens of the United States. Every Country in the world has a Post office. Our tax dollars should go to services that are efficient granted. Foreign wars are a very good place to start...eliminate them. No more nation building neo-cons and we would have more here at home. Build a strong defense, make the Coast guard our first defense always, and fund it properly..... These would be some good things to do, what are yours?
The best way to boycott BP (and all other oil companies) is to push our government for greater investments into alternative energy.
You can:
write your representative/senator/congressman/president and let them know how important this issue is to you and that you will give your vote and support accordingly
start up your own alternative energy research or company
form a massive lobby group to counter the massive lobbying done by oil companies including BP
promote general awareness of how to best boycott oil companies by writing books, giving talks, filming movies/documentaries, etc.
donate to an NGO or nonprofit group that fights for environmental causes/alternative energy. They are mounting huge campaigns right now, and with greater public support, we can really push this thing farther than ever before.
Obama has invested tons of money into alternative energy. But it still PALES in comparison to the subsidies, tax breaks, and lobbying power of oil interests. We need to do a LOT more.
Boycotting individual BP stations hurt local business owners way more than the company itself because most BP stations are independently owned. Going to a different gas station isn't much better - I mean, Exxon is probably the world's most evil company - they purposefully dragged out a 1989 oil spill lawsuit over 15 years until it was finally settled about 5 or so years ago, way after public furor died down. But the oil is still harming the ecosystem up there in Prince William Sound to this day.
It's really not that hard to get started, honestly. And now's the BEST time to do it. Hand-write a letter or call into the office of your elected official and let them know what you think.
