I'm trying to decide which career to pursue, either sign language interpretation or becoming a dietitian. I'm interested in both, but would like input and opinions about each field. Thank you.
ASL Interpretors avg $20.75 an hour most interpreters work either on a freelance basis or for a government agency. Depending on yrs of experience and specialty w/in nutrition avg w/ experience $40-50k/yr.
Gauge wage vs school requirements as to what makes sense economically.
I definitely agree that you should check out costs versus what you'll get in the future, especially if making a lot of money is important to you (and even if it's not necessarily, you probably still don't want to spend more on college than you'll get in wages). Hope this helps.
Dieticians need lots of science classes, so are you strong in that area? If so, why don't you consider another medical field that makes more money and has more job opportunities? I've known several dieticians who either changed their major to nursing while in college, or returned to nursing school after college.
Don't know much about sign intrepretors, but there doesn't seem to be a big demand for them.
Also look into the licensing requirements in the state you'll be living in after graduation. Some states have registered/licensed dietitians AND nutritionists, and one of those professions may have higher requirements than the other.
I'd also suggest dietitian for better job prospects. When I started college, I almost chose Nutrition as my major but then changed to Nursing because of the unpaid internship to get the RD and the better job opportunities for an RN (I ended up with a Health Education degree in the end).
You could minor in ASL(or take ASL classes) while getting a Nutrition degree, I would suppose.
