Another thing - in my son's first grade class, a bunch of his classmates turned or were turning 7 as they started the year on Aug 24th (those summer b/days who waited an extra year). Only one child had a summer birthday and started right as he turned 6. So he is a full year younger than his classmates. So it is worth finding out both when the cutoff is for your area, and what other parents do in your area. Is it as common as it is here to hold a year? If so, your daughter would be more likely to be among her same aged peers if you wait.

The earlier that your daughter starts being involved in a fully English setting, the better she will grasp the language.

My parents could have held me back in first grade, because my teacher didn't think that I was "ready" for the second grade, but they chose not to, and I'm really, really glad that they didn't. I have a June birthday and I have done just fine throughout school. A lot of my friends have summer birthdays... even mid to late August, and they've done just fine.

It can be emotionally damaging to hold back a child for a year. Once your child is a junior in high school, she'll be turning 18 and wanting to act as an adult, but she'll still have to live at home and be in high school. That will be straining.

Your daughter's birthday just isn't late enough for me to think that age will be an issue. My birthday is in June and I was still older than plenty of my friends in my grade.

Here the cut off is Oct 1st. My friend's son was born July 24th. He is the youngest kid in is class (4th grade). Every other kid with a bday between July 24 - Oct 1st was held back a year. Boys and girls - every single one of 'em. There were a couple of kids younger than him in first grade but they all ended up repeating 1st grade.

I agree with Oogax3Girl. More exposure to English would help your daughter with her language skills.

Based on her age, I don't see a reason to hold her back. That being said, you know your daughter. If you think she's not ready, then give her another year. If you're not sure, ask the advice of her teachers.
