Basically, South Korea is going to spend 2$ billion to develop digital textbooks (cutting out publishers?) and move towards using tablets as educational tools.
I would suspect that current publishers would still be involved in producing content, only switching from paper to digital. This transformation is inevitably going to happen here, is already happening in some places, it's just a question of when.

That will make for much lighter backs from carrying all those books. In HS I had to carry books AND a laptop (school-issued) to class. Man that was a heavy load.
Alan, would you mind sharing a bit about your experience? What was your school's purpose for issuing you a laptop and do you think it fulfilled that purpose? How did you use it on a daily basis to complete academic tasks? Did you find it of benefit? Why or why not? How did your teachers feel about the program (e.g., enthusiastic, overwhelmed)? When you or one of your classmates had a problem how was it addressed?
If the US gets that here, I just hope they're not going to try and make us pay an arm and a leg for these books. God knowing they're going to try hard to keep the college textbook racket going.
I'm sorry, but 100 dollars for a Physics textbook with a slight revision isn't something anyone wants to pay for. The internet is already making expensive textbooks obsolete because we can get our information - for free - just by searching for it.
Only thing I think is stopping us from fully using the internet is our lame sourcing guidelines for term papers.
Although I agree with you about the expense of textbooks (think about the number of hours your professors spend revising courses every time a new edition is published!), it's folly to believe that everything worth knowing is available on the internet, especially when it comes to the type of reading/research required of serious scholars, and isn't that what higher education is all about?
