No, the reason it escalated to this point is that he had no classroom management skills. The minute the "fake" sneezing starts, you shut it down. The guy had no respect from the students, that is why they messed with him. I never had problems like this, from Day One, I was HBIC, no questions about it. Students who gave other teachers problems straightened up in my class, because of peer pressure, their peers regulated behavior.

We did exciting learning activities in my class, that were engaging, interactive, and relevent. The kids discouraged their peers from acting inappropriately because it intereferred with their learning and enjoyment. That is the key to classroom management, you don't do it, the other kids do. And they knew my reaction to misbehavior was swift, consistent, and had consequences for eveyone.

This guy lost respect of his students, and then, he was toast. Teaching is like lion taming, you keep all the lions engaged, but once you lose control, it is complete chaos.

The issue of keeping a class "under control" aside ...

If this was an issue around a saying or practice affiliated with Muslims, for example, this would be even more of a bru-haha.

Here in MA there are many school districts in which the Pledge of Allegiance is either not recited at all, or just once a week.

This sneezing/"Bless You" incident does reflect some of the issues in schools and society in general where the Christian faith is under attack, even if done so in subtle ways.
