...So has anyone ever done it? I've recently been giving some serious thought about studying for a year in another country (Mainly Germany or Spain) and would like to hear some input from other members. Please and thank you

I think it's better put off until college. For one thing, it's much easier to do things abroad as an adult. For another, if you go your senior year it really makes it difficult to apply to colleges. One option that I think is great is getting a rotary scholarship and doing a post- HS grad year abroad. Rotary.org: Ambassadorial Scholarships

It's becoming more and more common for students to do a study abroad for a semester or a year in college, and IMHO, that's the best time to do it. I see no advantage to doing a study abroad in High School.
