On a few other message boards I patronize, people have been writing in telling about how their districts are instituting new programs of community outreach in which teachers pay visits to the homes of their elementary-school students, take pictures to be displayed in the classroom, and take notice of the house, family situation, and other conditions of the home.

Anyone else creeped out by this? Does your school do it?

I do not have any kids and I have never heard of this. If true - that is just crazy. Is there an "educational" purpose to this activity?

When I was in high school, my home economics teacher paid a visit to all her students. I think she was interested in how to best teach the students things they needed to know. We got a really warm feeling from this very dedicated teacher. She was in no way intimidating.

When we got into the school year, one of the assignments was to buy everything needed to make a dress. One little girl just didn't have the materials for her dress. We walked into class the next day and everything she needed was waiting at her desk. My desk was close enough to hers to hear the teacher quietly tell her it was a present from the school boosters club. Maybe more teachers should visit children's homes.

I don't like the thought of being displayed in the classroom idea at all...I know in some of the special ed classes ds has been in they have had home visits............when they did some of these home visits they found quite a few things lacking in some of the care and well being of the child..We had one child who was always hoarding food at school and found out She was not getting the quality and quantity of meals at home..and they intervened ..

A home visit by a teacher the week before school started was required in one private school we were in. There was nothing about picture displays or anything though. Our teacher cancelled all of her visits at the last minute. I would soon learn the teacher was horrible and we withdrew from the school within weeks of school starting. I didn't like the idea of a home inspection, but it told me more about the teacher than it told her about us.

In our heavily Hispanic public schools, home visits by the teacher (esp a Spanish speaking one) is considered an honor by the family.

Aside from being creppy, that's way too time consuming.

Not so new. Mostly for kindergarten students, though I am not sure our schools still do this.

Maybe in small communities? Just a guess. I've never heard of it in my school district.

in one of the districts where i worked we were encouraged to visit our students' homes to meet parents regarding discipline issues, because it was often impossible to reach them by phone and mail would go unanswered. i declined.

I have read about home visits in districts with lower income areas. The article was in a magazine that was printed a few years ago. Basically it said that might be the only time a teacher met the parent, and was a good way to see what the childs situation at home was.
