Dad probably cheated his way through law school and was hoping junior could follow in his footsteps.
Could be. We were at a wedding (relatives, but not close) and the dad actually bragged about cheating in college and then told stories about his son cheating too.
I heard that a group of 6 students in an Orange County, CA community college all had the same class schedule. One student out of the six would concentrate on one class, another student would concentrate on another class, and so forth. The work was then shared. They had an elaborate cheating scheme.
If the schools lawyers are smart they will treat it like a contract. The father and son signed a rider for the honors class which replaces the wording of the original contract. If, as the OP states, the student printed an entire essay verbatim written by someone else with their own name on it then the school had no choice since it was such gross violation. The Father is doing cya to save face in the community.
Regarding the question upthread about the program that checks for plagiarism, Turnitin.com is the one used for the University I teach for. It works quite well.
Thanks to the dad's response, I'm not so sure the boy will be learning the right lessons about cheating, so he may still wind up going the way of your roommate.
Exactly. As a teacher, I see "helicopter" parents fighting their kids' battles all the time, albeit the wrong battles.
Consequences applied fairly teach kids what they will need to know to become adults. I hope this father is prepared to continue to raise his kid through adulthood....because that is what he is setting up.
I encourage my own kids to advocate for themselves in school....and in this situation, they wouldn't dream of it because there isn't anything a responsible students would consider okay.
