Would it annoy you to discover that a teacher felt your (six year old) kid was throwing too much food away at lunch time and forced them to sit at the table long after lunch was over until they had consumed every bite of the hot lunch they had purchased? Up to and including demanding they drink the multiple packages of condiments their lunch came with, resulting in the child throwing up?
This teacher is not the actual teacher of the child, but was a teacher on duty in the cafeteria at the time.
I asked to teacher to confirm this and recieved a rather brusque response of "Yeah, so are you going to throw some big historonic fit now?"
When I was in elementary school our teachers on duty used to check to make sure we were eating our food, including those awful canned green beans. But it was more to make sure kids weren't rushing to get outside before consuming a decent amount. It was not done in an abusive manner. Drinking condiments? Abusive.
I would appreciate being told if food was being wasted--ONCE--but as for consequences like being forced to eat...I would be all over that adult and in the office then the board office then the newspapers.
That's what I thought, this whole situation is just p*ssing me off big time, especially the attitude of the teacher. I keep getting told that they didn't "Force" the condiment drinking, as in they didn't shove it into her mouth. But if you are not allowed to leave until you comply, isn't that forcing??????? I told the principle I'd like the teacher to apologize to the child (teacher was standing right there when I requested this), which resulted in an eye-roll and the accusation of me being "historonic". The principle seemed unsure what to do and just looked around sheepishly.
I had to get going as the nurse requested the child be taken home due to the throw up, and my daughter was still looking green from a "tummy ache".
That was standard policy at my elementary school. You could not leave the lunch area for recess until your had finished all of your food. If you did not want to finish, you could return to your classroom instead but not go out onto the playground.
We don't make an issue out of food at home, and I would not tolerate a school employee making an issue out of food, either. I would absolutely be in there throwing a histrionic fit.
I have never required my daughter to "clean her plate". I tell her to eat until her stomach is full, period.
If this had happened to her I would have gone to the principal immediatley. Also, the teachers attitute was not called for. How about bringing the amount of food your child was reqired to eat and all of the condiment packages with you the next time you meed and tell him/her she has to eat and drink it all. Then see how she react
You have every rite to throw a big historic major fit.
