Wow, this just makes me so sad. Taking the fun out of school one dumb rule at a time. They're taking this fight against fat way too far now. I kind of had dreams of baking cupcakes for my future/imaginary daughter's high school dance club/cheerleader squad/lit magazine club/anarchist group...

Sometimes these things are so stupid, they don't even deserve a name.

In MD the Health Department has gotten into the act so concession sales of baked goods, or hot dogs or whatever is pretty much banned. No certified Food Service person on site.

I fail to understand the relevance of school bake and candy sales to school academics?

I am totally fine with this, if not for the exact same reason.

We had an ambulance requiring allergic reaction when a parent assured a student that there were no nuts in food at a bake sale when there was peanut oil in some of the items. He almost died.

This year, one girl was mortified when her lemon bars caused mild food poisoning for everyone who ate them.

Umm, did you read the article? Many school extracurricular clubs and groups are supported through these fundraisers. These groups may lose a large chunk of their funding (funding not provided by the state, BTW) due to this bill. Last I checked, extracurricular activities made for a well rounded education (or is that no longer the case w/ NCLB and this new age of teaching to the test?).

the scouts are for playing organized sports, musical performances, studying foreign language, organizing school field trips, etc?

not to mention the scouts (bsa/gsa) are a very religious organization and doesn't mesh with the views of a diverse community - only a group within a diverse community

So schools should just disband groups and clubs like football, cheerleading/dance squads, debate squads, school bands, drama/theater clubs, school newspapers/magazines, math clubs, class trips, and a variety of other activities like this that get a good chunk of funding from sales? Really? My school had all of these plus more and I spent more than my fair share of time selling candy, cupcakes, and coupon books to take part in these groups and enjoyed every second of it. Sad to see schools just becoming a place where kids sit in a desk 8 hours a day to learn the material on the MCAS tests. So much of what made school enjoyable is being squeezed out (recess, longer lunches, art/music classes, extracurricular activities, etc).

It's a dumb law that won't help in the fight against fat but hurt the bottom line of several groups.
