Interesting NY Times article on kids taking stimulants to achieve better test results. I am surprised at how widespread this is (not just in NYC prep schools).

I'd much rather have my kids have average grades than fall into this scene. I will have to make sure they know this as they grow....

You are unusual. The most common parent call I field is "My child has a B+ or A-....how do we make that an A?"...

And use of stay awakes is nothing new. High achieving kids have always used stimulants, whether caffiene pills, No-Doz or whatever to keep going. The upgrading to Adderall (and I assume Ritalin is in the mix, too) is just taking it to a new level.

I agree that this is nothing new.
But I disagree with what I bolded above. There are plenty of high achieving kids who never used stimulants.

Why does this surprise anyone? It's been going on since, in my memory, the 1980s when doctors began prescribing Ritalin for ADHD or "hyperactivity disorder" is what they called it back then. I remember some of my fellow high schoolers selling their stash of Ritalin or trading for street drugs like weed and LSD.

As a college student, I remember extended release Adderall (new back then) was going for $10 a pill especially around exam time. I've heard from a cousin a little younger than me that at his college it was the preferred drug of choice because it helps you study and after taking it, one can drink all night without really getting drunk.

This stuff is bad news and it's banned in Canada. Those darn Canadians! Don't they know that it's socialistic to ban a good stimulant drug that doctors prescribe to kids as young as eight!

Ah, I sleep better at night knowing that our doctors, paid via insurance dollars, have the freedom to hook our youth on stimulants! American medicine and healthcare is truly the greatest system in the world!

I wonder why addiction in general surprises anyone. There's a pill for everything now, and society seems to be fully entrenched in the marketed 'need' for one for any ailment.
