When do you all think the school year should start and end? I think it should start no later than the Wednesday before Labor Day and end no later than the Friday after Memorial Day. This way you get to transition into the year and get to have a smooth exit. I was in one district that started school August 20th and was out before Memorial Day. We had at least one day off every month and felt very refreshed. My current district starts the Tuesday after Labor Day and ends a week after Memorial Day due to excessive PD days and a week long spring break. The argument for starting after Labor Day is because we don't have air conditioning which to me is a weak argument. What is everyone here's take on it?

You must have been somewhere that went by hours. We go by days in North Carolina- 185.

North Carolina law requires we start no earlier than August 25 and end no later than June 10.

I'd rather begin earlier in August and get out in May.

School should start the first week of August and go to the second week of June. A 6 week summer break is plenty long enough. Take the other 4 weeks and spread them throughout the year.

@ jaynarie we have a 180 day requirement, I haven't heard anything about hours. We have no consistency as far as a statewide law saying when to start and when to end.

@Ivorytickler, the first week of August seems early, but if there are enough breaks it could work. The problem we have in our district is too many PD days. We could be out of school earlier if we didn't have so many.

As a former teacher and business person, I think the schools should teach continusly. No summer breaks. Utilize the buildings all year around. Kids attend classes a number of weeks, then a week or two off while advancing to the next level. There is too much waste in shutting down and starting up again. The tax payers deserve more accountability for their tax money, IMHO

Yes, it would mean restructering the whole school system. The summer months was for harvesting, that is no longer utilized or needed.

I think the school year should start the Tuesday immediately following Labor Day. Families should be able to enjoy the summer until the end of the season. The school year should end some time in June depending on what holidays/days off there are during the school year.

Long answer? It depends.
Short answer? Fewer than now.

I went to schools with no A/C. Sorry but students are NOT going to learn when they are sitting in little pools of their own sweat.
