If you put your name on a wooden carved sign outside your house would you not use an apostrophe? For example, would it be written just The Denver's or The Denvers?

Would it not be plural so there is not a need for The Denver's, just The Denvers?

Thanks

I figured you were trying to decide what to put on your nameplate.

Yes, I am trying to decide but I just want to know which one would be correct. It's up to me I guess.

It depends on what you are referring...if you put "The Denver's" you could be referring to your house, your residence and the possessive would work. You can add house and see that it works...."The Denver's house".

If you put "The Denvers" you could be referring to the multiple number of Denvers that live there. Add a number before it and you see that it works...."The 4 Denvers that live here"

So as USA 1900 said it truly is your call.

Don't use the apostrophe unless you put something after the word with the apostrophe.

The Denvers means a family named Denver lives here.

If I see The Denver's it makes me think, "What belongs to Denver?"

Denver's Half Acre, for example, or the Denvers' Half Acre.

But then now that I look at it, if more than one Denver lives there, to use the possessive correctly you would need to put "The Denvers'" because you would be adding possession to a plural.

No, i don't teach English.

No apostrophe.

If your last name is "Denver," the sign should read, "The Denvers."

This will probably get moved to the Writing forum, though.
