My son (18) really struggles with reading, and does best when he can read something while it's both being highlighted and can hear what is being read.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best software (preferably free) to download?

I have a few readers on my now dead Nexus 7 tablet. One of them did that though I only used it to test how it worked a couple of times. It may have been

Cool Reader or FB Reader

I mostly used Smart AudioBook Reader. It doesn't show the text but it could play along while the book is viewed on another app.

There are many free online tool available on the internet. You can use them, they will help for Convert text to speech..
