Many of the examples given here showing how algebra is used in daily living just seem like simple arithmetic calculations. What makes them algebra?

A missing variable that you have to solve for.

If that's the case, then I must be even worse at math than I thought.

So you are just going to ignore the advice given?

Look I don't mean to be harsh but based on what you have stated here, that you cannot remember steps, and that you had a traumatic brain injury, you need to get professional help.

This is why community colleges exist. Go there. Get tested. Doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results is insane.

Algebra is just simple math, without numbers aka with variables.

It is used to find an unknown because we just pretend it is a variable.

I was able to solve a couple of problems on the worksheets.

But as I demonstrated with the eggs problem, you can do that without having to "solve" anything. It's a lot faster just to figure out how many eggs you need using logic and arithmetic than it is to do an algebraic equation. I realize that was just a simple example to make a point and that NO ONE would do an equation to figure that out, but it didn't really demonstrate that "we use algebra in our everyday lives".

The examples I'm talking about are addition and multiplication.

Anytime you solve for an unknown in an equation, it's algebra-even if you use only addition and subtraction in the original formula, as long as there's an unknown, its algebra. Which example didn't use an unknown?
