A lot pf principals are suspending students for what they do at home. Do you think principals have a right to monitor and control your kid's life?
If it impacts school yes.
Example, if you are using social media at home to bully a classmate, and it effects their school life, that is something the school needs to get involved in.

At my school, they're monitoring social media because of the potential for bullying and the legal ramifications should said cyber bullying occur during school on the school network or a school computer.

Thank your principal. I'm not kidding. What you put out there stays out there and employers now screen social media to see who you really are before hiring you. Your behavior on social networks needs to be above reproach. You don't yet understand how quickly something you said in anger can follow you for years to come. Once out there, you can't take it back.
When I was a kid, if something off color or out of character was said, only those present at the time heard it and it was probably quickly forgotten. For your generation, it's as if everything you say, on any form of social media, is said while standing on a stage with cameras rolling for all the world to see and view over and over and over to keep it fresh in their minds.
You may consider this harsh but it is being done for your own good. While I don't think monitoring what kids put on line should be the school's job, the school has an issue in that they are responsible for what you do during school time and while using school equipment. That leaves them no choice but to monitor social media.
I'm sorry you got into trouble over what you consider nothing but learn a lesson. Keep your nose clean on line. Stop and think before you post. Would you want a future employer to read what you just wrote? Your future spouse? Your mother or father? Your brothers and sisters? Your kids? When you put something on the internet, it is recorded for posterity. You don't yet appreciate what those who are monitoring what you do on line are trying to do for you. Someday you will when you watch a friend, or worse, yourself, trying to dig out of a situation created by someone who dug up dirt on the internet on them/you. There are people out there who will use anything you say against you even if you said it years ago.
Your generation does not yet appreciate the fact that you have no privacy when it comes to social media. It's not just your friends who see what you write and it's not said and forgotten. It hangs around for years and years and is available to anyone who wants to see it.
Get used to it.....your employer is going to do the same thing.
Your employer has more of a right to do it than a school principal. Employees tacitly agree to any such conditions of employment, giving employers broad rights. School is a public institution, and is subject to Constitutional guarantees including those enumerated in the First Amendment. A school principal has no more rights over a student than a librarian has over the patrons or the county register of deeds has over citizens at home.
However, school attendance no longer being truly mandatory in practice, school principals are in fact assuming these unconstitutional (and unconscionable) rights, and not being seriously challenged, so routinely get away with it, as the American public willingly allows their rights to be abrogated, in fact with gratitude.
