Hey everyone! I am searching for parental opinions on the following states with regards to public school districts ASD/Autism resources:

Montana
Idaho
Wyoming
Oregon

Currently we live in Mt Pleasant, MI, the elementary and middle schools have so far been outstanding. But we are looking to move out west. I've heard a couple bad things about Montana (Bozeman to be exact). So before I cut off my job searching I wanted to try getting info about the other states. My daughter is 11, almost 12 and she's been diagnosed with Asperger's since she was 7.

If it helps any, I'm looking for smaller towns, like under 30k in population.

Thanks!

I would suggest posting to an autism forum (not the special needs forum here, though you could do that as well).

Try babycenter's autism group.
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder - BabyCenter

I have heard nothing good about Oregon at all.

Agreed on Oregon. I have a friend though who specifically moved her family from Bozeman to our town, Camas, Washington, for the autism services. OP it's a nice place, a suburb of Portland, OR, you might want to check it out.

Hi Ben, I'm actually in Canada so I can't help you with locations, but we are doing the same thing here. I have been having great success in contacting autism support groups in our provinces and finding out which ones provide the best services, straight from the parents themselves. I recommend getting started with narrowing down the advocacy groups and picking up the phone, you'll get good honest information from parents in your situation. That's how we found our choice, which is across the country, and awaiting a transfer now.

I know your health care system is very different but we also made sure to check provincial (state, for you) funding allocations to autism services, which was strongly factored as well.

I actually found an Autism forums website.. if my question had been about the scientific differences between brain chemicals released during a melt down versus the direction of prevailing winds in Antarctica I think I might have gotten more responses than than I have thus far.

Most of those in this forum don't know much about autism and services and those that do have specific places they work or live where they do know. Unfortunately, that is the simple truth. I have an autistic grandson. I would not ask in this forum about services since very few special ed teachers are posting here and those that do probably don't live where I live.

You may do better with responses by asking on the specific state forums, or sub forum if there is one for the area where you are interested. Oops, just checked and see you did that for Bozeman. Try other states. I know for my area people do respond to these type of questions for their locality. Likewise, you may only get naysayers. What may be just as good is reading through school profiles on their websites and especially ask questions to school districts directly about their services. Good luck.
