I would appreciate any detailed information about KUMON.
I do understand this is an "after-school / supplemental education" program but I would be interested in details about the actual learning process involved. What exactly do children do in Kumon?

- Are they tutored one-on-one or in a class/group format?
- How long does a tutoring session last?
- What type of work are children asked to do? (Examples for Math and for Language Arts)
- Are they assigned certain tasks/problems, left to work on their own and then the tutor/instructor comes back to check the work or are they working under the direct eye of the tutor with the tutor intervening when the child might make a mistake, might stumble, etc.
- What aim is the tutoring calibrated for? Remedial? Mastery? Challenge for advanced students? All of these?
- What type of qualifications do KUMON tutors usually have? In other words, who does the tutoring usually?
- What are typical costs for a tutoring session? Also does the typical Kumon tutor/instructor get paid for an hour of his/her time?

Thank you so much for any info you might be able to share.

My kids went there many years ago and personally, I feel it was worth every penny. However, when they attended (both math and English), there was no tutoring per se. The students were pre-tested, placed at a certain subject level, and worked on their own in pamphlets. The work was graded by Kumon staff, who are usually retired teachers or college students. They move up to the next level depending on what they have mastered. Students must do a certain amount of work at home (20-30 minutes) every day, including weekends, for the program to be successful.

There are a lot of threads about Kumon; here are a few:
